BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ: BBRY)
BlackBerry, at one point in time, was on top of the world when it came to smartphones. In fact, it can be argued that the company was the leading driver of innovation in the industry years ago. However, today, the company controls around 1% of the market share in the smartphone industry, and is working hard to take a larger piece of the pie. Early this morning, like every morning, the first thing I did was start researching the stocks that I follow. When I came across BlackBerry, one of the first news stories that I saw was titled “BlackBerry Smartphones: Pretty Much Dead”. But are BBRY smartphones a thing of the past? I don't think so. Today, we'll talk about what we've seen recently out of BBRY with regard to its phones, whether or not this will be enough to save the branded smartphone, and what we can expect to see from the company moving forward. So, let's get right to it...

BlackBerry Has Made Some Pretty Big Changes To Their Smartphone Game
As mentioned above, it can be argued that BBRY was the leading source of innovation in the smartphon industry when the industry began. However, things changed rapidly a couple years in. Soon, as other tech companies saw the profitability in the handheld devices, we started to see more and more companies offering them. This became a big issue for BBRY. While the company's hardware and security were the top of the line, the operating system simply couldn't keep up with the pack. Soon enough, consumers decided they liked the Android and iOS operating systems, and these systems took the lead.
From there, it took years of declines, but BlackBerry finally found something that worked for them. The company swallowed an incredibly bitter pill, realizing that it couldn't keep up in the operating system space, the company decided to make a new breed of phone. The new phone, known as the Priv came with the incredible hardware and security that BBRY is known for, but with one difference, it was run by the Android operating system. The phone absolutely flew off of the shelves. In fact, sales for the phone blew up so quickly that some shipments were delayed.
Soon, after seeing the success of the Priv, BBRY made another announcement. The company would be creating more cell phones along the same lines as the Priv. While we haven't seen them yet, we are expecting to see a line of smartphones created by BlackBerry that run on the Android operating system.
Will This Be Enough To Save BBRY Phones?
In my opinion, the answer is yes. While I understand why some would believe that BlackBerry smartphones are dead, these people must not be looking at recent data. As mentioned above, when the company came out with the Priv, BBRY sold so many of them that shipments were delayed. The reality is that consumers love BBRY hardware and security, and consumers love the Android operating system, by putting the two together, BlackBerry has come up with a product offering like nothing else on the market, and that will sell!
What We Can Expect From BBRY Moving Forward
Moving forward, I have an overwhelmingly bullish opinion of what we can expect to see from BBRY. The reality is that the company is back on top of the ball when it comes to creating a compelling smartphone offering. On top of that, I've been incredibly impressed with the movements the company has made to take its share of the Internet of Things industry, the hardware industry, and the security industry. All in all, BBRY is likely to grow from here.
